Half Blood Prince

II'll just say that I was dissatisfied with the writing for the majority of the book first. Seeing as thing picked in the last 150 pages or so, I was planning on making a spoiler cut to discuss the things that made me not give up hope in the series, and become even more excited to read DH. However, livejournal isn't working propperly for me right now and my head is throbbing so I'll write part 2 tomorrow. Feel free to comment on part1.

Problem #1: the title. Please someone tell me WTF was the point of the half blood prince subplot. The only thing it did for me was make me really annoyed with both Hermione and Harry. I really don't understand how Harry could not see the problem with him getting outside help to get better grades than his friend who works 10x harder than him. I really hate how he gets himself out of situations by luck or by using the talents of others.

Problem #2
My main problem with the book was that it just felt like a holdover and was much longer than it needed to be. I realize it's the shortest book since POA but it dragged on much longer than the previous two(GoF and OoTP). I felt like time was wasted with getting to the bottom of the horcruxes. I had hoped Hary had learned his lesson and realize that when Dumbledore gives him an assignment he should follow up on it. However, Harry was preoccupied with Malfoy and Ginny. Both s/l fell short for me until the end. However when the last five chapters came into focus things got a lot better.

Next time: I will discuss those whacky Weasleys, Albus Dumbledore, the Malfoys, the Order, Harry and Hermione, and of course Tom Marvolo Riddle.
